Access updates for MCLS members due to COVID-19

NewspaperArchive

We at NewspaperArchive.com would like to extend our hand in these trying times. We understand many institutions are closing their doors to the public for health and preventative reasons. We would love to help by offering your staff & patrons free access to our 300 million page newspaper collection from the comfort of their own homes. This is a unique feature about our database – remote access to our site using a referring URL or EZProxy IP.

We would also like to offer free remote access to all other libraries who are not currently a part of our community. If you happen to know of any other libraries or institutions that could benefit from our services during these solemn times, we would be happy to extend free access to them during this global pandemic.

In order to obtain remote access, we will need your library’s physical IP address for the initial set up, and either a referring URL or an EZProxy IP address for remote access. If you are interested in setting this up, please let us know by emailing jknebel@worldarchives.com.

Oxford University Press

Policy Map

PolicyMap is adding additional support to academic libraries, faculty members, and students affected by COVID-19. For faculty pivoting to online instruction, PolicyMap is now providing free university-wide trial access for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester. University Libraries can contact us for free university-wide trial access for all staff and students.

PolicyMap is an online data and mapping application in use by over 160 universities across the United States. Our geographic data warehouse contains over 40,000 regularly updated indicators, notably health conditions and socio-economic factors that are exclusive to PolicyMap and indispensable for research and curriculum as universities move to a digital learning environment.

  • Browse published papers and resources using PolicyMap and explore our data directory to identify data valuable for your coursework.
  • Check out our blog post about identifying populations vulnerable to COVID-19.
  • Review our latest newsletter about how researchers at Columbia University’s Built Environment and Health Research Groups use PolicyMap to identify populations at risk for developing severe COVID-19.

Contact Betsy Minnich at betsy.minnich@policymap.com to set up access.

ProQuest

We here at ProQuest understand that these are very difficult times and that our customers are seeking to provide and promote enhanced online services to their patrons and students. To that end, we have three initiatives that we are rolling out with immediate effect:

  • Subscribers to Books In Print, Global Books In Print and Resources for College Libraries who access through the library IP, can now access remotely via username and password logins. Find out more here: http://www.booksinprint.com/login and http://www.rclweb.net/login
  • For Syndetics Unbound customers, we’ve created new functionality that allows you to prioritize electronic resources in recommendations and other enhancements. Find out more here: https://proquest.libguides.com/syndetics/eresources
  • Use Book Display Widgets to promote electronic resources on your website with free access for three months. Reprints Desk

We have temporarily opened up some of our premium features to our academic customers for no charge. Many of you have been playing an important role in dealing with this crisis we’re facing, and we just want you to know that we are here to support you. Our service remains up and running, 24/7. While we’ve had to do a few things differently, as a whole we’ve been able to maintain our normal service levels — and anticipate keeping it that way.

We’ve heard of struggles in continuing to support library patrons and we’d like to assist you where we’re able. As such, we’re temporarily opening up some of our premium features (such as the Open Access Filter and Duplicate Order Detection) to our academic customers for no charge. Please let us know if you’d like to activate these features, helping you streamline your workflow.

Maybe there are other ways we can help you during these trying times. If you have requests, ideas, or suggestions please let us know.

Sincerely,
Tony Landolt

SAGE

SAGE would like to provide 90-day access to our digital resources by IP authentication. (Unfortunately, we can’t legally drop the paywall altogether due to contracts with license partners and doing so would jeopardize usage analytics for customers in need of ROI reporting. However, we want to make things as simple for you as possible.)

For access to SAGE Video, SAGE Research Methods Video and SAGE Knowledge Books & Reference please fill out this form to receive institution-wide access. We will do our best to turn on access within 24 hours, but due to demand it may take longer.

Our commitment to you is that these requests will not be treated as sales opportunities, and the only follow-up you will receive from us will be to make sure you have everything you need to make these resources work for your campus. For the immediate future, SAGE will be pausing additional email outreach and contacting you only when we have resources that directly support your library, faculty and students.

You should also know that SAGE has also taken steps to ensure the continuity of our business and service to our customers; our platforms will be operating as normal and any support issues should be logged in the usual way.

Free textbook access:
SAGE is committed to helping you and your students through this uncertain time. For remote teaching information please see resources here: https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/remote-teaching-solutions.

We are working with VitalSource and RedShelf to provide quick, easy, and free access to our SAGE textbook content through May 25th.

To learn more about the respective partner programs available—including how to access content—please see:

Students can then add 7 no-cost titles from participating publishers to their “My Shelf”.

If you need further assistance regarding textbooks, please contact Lisa Kostecki (Lisa.Kostecki@sagepub.com) – Director, Channel Sales.

We also encourage you to bookmark our coronavirus information webpage which is updated frequently and includes news from our Books Division. Electronic subscription access
As universities move to remote coursework, we encourage librarians to:

  • Contact us at journalsupport@press.uchicago.edu to add new institutional and proxy IP ranges that might be used for remote access.
  • Link your Shibboleth entity ID to your University of Chicago Press account so patrons can log in directly through our site. To do so, contact journalsupport@press.uchicago.edu with your Shibboleth entity ID. You may also add the ID yourself by logging in to our site with your administrator credentials and visiting your “My Account” page. To add the ID, click “Shibboleth” in the “Institutional Account” menu.

Please contact journalsupport@press.uchicago.edu if you, your faculty, or your students experience any connectivity problems while accessing journals remotely. We have and will continue to address these issues quickly.

Electronic access to print-only journal subscriptions
We are enabling electronic access to print-only journal subscriptions to help institutions deal with remote coursework. If your library has a print-only subscription to one of our journals and you notice you do not have electronic access by April 1st, please email journalsupport@press.uchicago.edu to set up access.

Delivery of print editions
Due to supply chain disruptions, customers may see delays in delivery of print editions. We are making every effort to ensure that delivery will be made. If your institution is unable to receive mail, please email us as soon as possible at subscriptions@press.uchicago.edu. We will hold your issues until you can receive mail.

Interlibrary loan and copying
We are facilitating the interlibrary loan and e-learning needs of libraries that subscribe to any of our journals by granting unlimited, fee-free copying through the end of June 2020. You may process interlibrary loan/e-learning copying requests from individuals or other libraries as you normally would, but you do not need to track or report usage for the purpose of paying copyright fees. We may extend this arrangement if necessary.

Copyright and fair use
In accordance with our normal practice, we will continue to allow all reuse of our content that falls under fair use provisions (see exception for interlibrary loan and e-learning above).

2021 rates
We are currently evaluating our 2021 rate plan in response to the disruption academic institutions will experience during this time. As a university press and a not-for-profit organization, we are dedicated to maintaining low rate increases every year, with all increases carefully considered in response to changing costs of production, editing, technology, volume, and the need to sustain the scholarship that we and our publishing partners support. Our team is in close communication with agents and librarians to better understand the unique hardships your institutions face each season. We are continuing that tradition and will provide information about 2021 rates as soon as possible.

Technology
Our content platform provider has been preparing aggressively to ensure business continuity in the face of a COVID-19 pandemic. We do not expect any service disruptions. If you experience a problem, please email us at journalsupport@press.uchicago.edu.
