Meet the trainer: Vicki Bloom

Vicki Bloom is a new instructor for MCLS, and will be teaching this month’s featured workshop, Purposeful reference: Developing connections and outcomes through research consultations.

Some fun facts about Vicki:

  • She has worked in libraries in four different states, including medical, special, public, and academic libraries.
  • During her first week as a medical librarian, she had to find an article on hernias for a doctor going into surgery in 20 minutes!
  • She currently runs a Veterans Book Club.
  • She has one daughter, who is in college at IU Bloomington.
  • She has a cat named Jazzy.
  • Her hobbies include painting, printmaking, and making jewelry, and she is currently painting in encaustic (with wax).
  • Her favorite TV show is Downton Abbey, but she’s also currently hooked on Games of Thrones, Homeland, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and Designated Survivor.
  • Her favorite movie is The Wizard of Oz.

Vicki has over 35 years of experience in academic, special, and medical libraries, with a focus on reference, instruction, and collection development.  She has conducted research consultations in a wide range of disciplines, including music, biology, religious studies, history, fine arts, psychology, gerontology, dance, and chemistry. Currently she is Dean of Library Services at Indiana University South Bend.  Previously she was Head of Reference Services for 14 years at University of California, Riverside. Vicki enjoys teaching, coaching, and mentoring new librarians and staff, and evaluating information resources.  She earned her BA in Art History at University of Michigan and her MSLS at Wayne State University.
