Register Online for “Library Succession Planning Workshop,” Indianapolis, March 22

What happens when your Assistant Director, who never talked about slowing down, suddenly announces her early retirement, effective in two weeks? What about a key department manager who unexpectedly must move to Oregon to take care of his ailing mother? And don’t forget that 45% of professional library staff will be lost by 2025 according to ALA’s Congress on Professional Education.

Succession planning is a form of risk management, and in order to be effective, the process should start before you need it. Succession planning integrates talent management and strategy, anticipates change, focuses of staff development and ensures that the right people are in the right place at the right times doing the right things.

On March 22, MCLS will be hosting a Library Succession Planning Program at the Radisson Hotel, Indianapolis Airport. During this interactive workshop, Paula M. Singer, Ph.D., will teach you how to create a succession plan for critical library positions, including being able to identify the positions for which such a plan is needed and being able to assess your library’s risk of losing key staff. You will also learn how to define competencies, identify talent, identify development needs and create a development plan, as well as implement and evaluate your succession plan.
