MCLS is excited and pleased to have been chosen as a recipient of a 2019 Indiana LSTA grant in the amount of $7,990 to support the development of digital skills and literacies of Indiana library staff. The grant project includes equipment for a mobile Chromebook Lab and five workshops that will be delivered throughout Indiana in early 2020. The workshops will provide training to library staff to support the development of a staff digital learning plan for their library. We are excited to have this opportunity to help Indiana library staff continue to build their digital literacy and skills.
This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Indiana State Library.
Michigan academics have long been a leader in the shared print movement, and an expanded group of libraries are embarking on MI-SPI 2.0. Thirteen academic libraries are joining together for a revised data refresh designed to help these libraries make data-driven decisions about their collections. Using OCLC’s Green Glass software, the 13 libraries will develop a new set of shared retention commitments, ensuring vital print resources are available to researchers and students throughout the state. The work in Michigan reflects national trends as academic libraries continue their quest to consolidate resources and/or open library space for new initiatives and campus partnerships. Groups helping coordinate national efforts include PAN (Print Archive Network) and the Partnership for Shared Book Collections.
Libraries participating in MI-SPI 2.0 include the following: Baker College, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Kettering University, Michigan State University, Northern Michigan University, Oakland University, Saginaw Valley State University, University of Michigan-Dearborn, Wayne State University, Western Michigan University.
MCLS plays a facilitating role in MI-SPI 2.0 and serves as the liaison between libraries and OCLC.
Back by popular demand due to the success of last year's workshops, MCLS, in partnership with the Library of Michigan, will be offering six more trainings on facilitation presented by We Can Work It Out, LLC.
Registration is now open for all six workshops, and several are already close to full. Check them out today!
We are pleased to announce that MCLS, in partnership with the Library of Michigan, will be bringing facilitators from the National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation (NCDD) to Michigan this August. We will be forming three cohorts of Michigan library staff who would like to learn a new method of engaging their communities, and be part of a cohort of peer support and coaching calls. The one-day trainings will take place in three locations around the state during the week of Aug. 5, 2019. Continuing support will take place via six months of monthly coaching conference calls and ongoing online peer support.
The Jerry Kline Community Impact Prize, developed in partnership between Library Journal and the Gerald M. Kline Family Foundation, has been created to recognize the public library as a vital community asset, and is designed to celebrate libraries that have significantly helped their communities thrive.
One winning library will receive $250,000 in unfettered grant monies from the Gerald M. Kline Family Foundation, and be profiled in the November issue of Library Journal and online.
The application deadline is August 1. We know that many of our Indiana and Michigan members are doing wonderful things in their communities, and we encourage you to apply.

During June, I continued having a variety of enlightening conversations with colleagues near and far, about the present and future for libraries and the organizations with whom they work, including consortia such as MCLS. Though our members face significant challenges, there are remarkable opportunities to continue collaborating to serve our communities in impactful ways.
The course schedule for July - December 2019 is now available as a downloadable PDF on our website and accepting registrations through the MCLS Store! Register today!
