The Library of Michigan and MCLS are pleased to announce a several month long community engagement training program for Michigan library staff. The training will be led by coaches from the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation
, and is being offered at no charge to selected Michigan libraries, with generous stipends provided through Library of Michigan LSTA funding.
Austin Stroud, Director of the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library in Bloomfield, IN, was one of 23 Indiana library staff selected by MCLS to receive funding to attend the 2015 Harwood/ALA Public Innovators Lab in Detroit, Michigan from October 14 to 16. The MCLS Annual Meeting will be held on November 20, 2015, from 10am to 11am Eastern (9am to 10am Central). You will learn about MCLS’s activities and accomplishments in fiscal year 2015, which ended on June 30.

During the conference, our staff will be presenting on "Library Match", a pilot project involving collaboration between Michigan and Indiana public libraries, and MCLS is co-hosting the pre-conference: "Wine Tasting, Beer Making and Literary Pub Crawls: Holding spirited events at your library." Attendees will learn how to convince the board, comply with state laws, get proper licensing, and keep it legal! Jeannette Merritt, Purdue Wine Grape Team, will even lead you through an educational wine tasting experience. Hope to see you there!
MCLS will be hosting a Community Engagement Roundtable on December 10 from 10:30am to 12pm Eastern (9:30am to 11am Central) at the Knox County Public Library in Vincennes, IN. This free opportunity is for anyone with an interest in community engagement. This will be a great opportunity to talk to one another about your efforts, and to get advice from the veterans at the Knox County Public Library, one of 10 libraries in the country selected by ALA as part of the Libraries Transforming Communities Public Innovators Cohort .
As a follow-up to our Media Coaching workshops, we invite you to participate in "Media Boot Camp: Interviewing Skills." We will review some of the basic tips for being interviewed by the media, and then attendees will participate in multiple interview scenarios. Interviews will be played back and constructively critiqued by your peers. Never say "no comment" again! It's fun, it's safe, and it's friendly to practice with your colleagues. Join us in Lansing, Michigan on December 1, or Lafayette, Indiana on December 3.

MCLS is offering a cataloging workshop focused on meeting MeLCat standards, so that records are successfully loaded into the statewide MeLCat catalog. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of data in fields which are part of the matching process MeLCat uses during record loading. The class is online for three 2 hour sessions over three consecutive days beginning November 10.

Libraries that use the DCB server for processing MeLCat should consider attending the November 18 'Lost in translation: Mapping, loading, and deleting data from DCB to MeLCat' webinar explaining the ongoing maintenance required to keep local records in sync with MeLCat records. The workshop will briefly review how bibliographic, item, and patron data is translated for MeLCat use through the use of local exports, record loads, and the mapping of local codes to equivalent MeLCat codes.
Reminder! The December move of the six MeL/MeLCat servers to a new hosting center will affect both MeLCat and the MeL Databases. On November 18, MeLCat requesting will be suspended for all users. On December 2, all MeLCat activity will cease for the transition. All MeL services will be restored by December 11.
