MCLS invites library staff of all types in Indiana and Michigan to participate in an exciting upcoming professional development opportunity. We will join together again, both physically and virtually to read and discuss the same book. With your help, we will select a book that is relevant to our profession, provides thought-provoking ideas for discussion, and has appeal across all types of libraries. Vote for one of four books on our “Libraries Read: 1 Book” Facebook event page. Voting will remain open until May 23. The selected title will be announced on June 1. Discussions and other events related to the title will take place throughout the summer.
MCLS is offering up to 10 scholarships to MCLS member libraries in Indiana for staff to participate in the Harwood Virtual Public Innovators Lab, June 23 to August 11, 2016. The Harwood Virtual Public Innovators Lab takes their signature 2.5-day training and transforms it into an interactive 8-week online course to help you and your organization learn what it means to turn outward — to use the community, not your conference room, as your reference point for choices and action. You will get the same quality training delivered in an innovative, new way. If traveling to an in-person lab is a challenge for you, then this is a great option.
These funds are being made available through a grant program established by the MCLS Board of Trustees from the proceeds of the sale of the former INCOLSA building. The deadline for application is May 13.
The Library of Michigan and MCLS are pleased to announce the capacity of the Michigan Harwood Cohort is slated to double. Starting in October 2016 a second group of Michigan library staff will undergo a several month long community engagement training program. The training will be led by coaches from the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, and is being offered at no charge to selected Michigan libraries, with generous stipends provided through Library of Michigan LSTA funding.
Join us every third Thursday in 2016, at 2pm Eastern (1pm Central), for a series of Twitter chats on topics of significance to libraries and library staff. Our next chat will feature Emily Bunyan, Director of the Knox County Public Library in Vincennes, IN. She will be chatting with us about finding the right partners, and working with them the right way.
As a follow-up to our Media Coaching workshops, we invite you to participate in "Media boot camp: interviewing skills." We will review some of the basic tips for being interviewed by the media, and then attendees will participate in multiple interview scenarios. Interviews will be played back and constructively critiqued by your peers. Never say "no comment" again! It's fun, it's safe, and it's friendly to practice with your colleagues. Join us at the Wheatfield branch of the Jasper County Public Library, in Wheatfield, IN on July 27.

The MeLCat Advisory Committee advises the State Librarian on policies for our statewide catalog and resource-sharing system. Committee members with a range of backgrounds from across the state represent the wide variety of libraries and automation systems that come together to make MeLCat successful.
Policy feedback from library staff is always welcome, so a new method has been introduced to contact the committee with your ideas, questions, and concerns about MeLCat Resource Sharing and Cataloging policies. Submissions to the feedback form will be sent to all committee members for consideration and discussion.
The migration to new servers in December allows the MeLCat team to process IP changes much faster, usually within two days. This has proven to be a great benefit since libraries no longer have to suspend MeLCat participation.
MeLCat questions should be sent to the MeLCat Help Desk: melcathelp@mcls.org.
The MeL project is funded by the Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) via the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library of Michigan, part of the Michigan Department of Education. Additional funding is provided by the State of Michigan.
