MCLS is excited to announce the addition of Indiana State Librarian Jake Speer to the MCLS Board of Directors. Jake has been at the helm of the Indiana State Library since 2014. He previously served at the Indiana State Library as the director of the Library Development Office from 2005-2010, and as the director of the Hussey-Mayfield Public Library in Zionsville, Indiana and the Waukee Public Library in Iowa.

Speer has a BA in both English and journalism from the University of Iowa and a MLS from Indiana University, Bloomington. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife Kathy and three sons. We look forward to his leadership and valuable input moving our library community forward.

Meet peer libraries: Hagerstown-Jefferson Township Library and Pickford Community Library

Two of our smallest member libraries, the Hagerstown-Jefferson Township Library in Hagerstown, Indiana and the Pickford Community Library in Pickford, Michigan have been paired up to participate in the pilot project “Library Match.” Each month we will highlight one of the peer matches participating in the project.  Read about what makes these libraries a good match and what they hope to learn from each other in our Library Match: Hagerstown & Pickford blog post.

Proceeds from sale of former INCOLSA building will benefit Indiana libraries

The MCLS Board of Directors has established a grant program for Indiana member libraries from the proceeds of the sale of the former INCOLSA building. $50,000 will be made available each fiscal year for the next 5 years for various grants and scholarships benefiting MCLS member libraries in Indiana. Jonah Berger will be our guest for a live Twitter chat about his book “Contagious: Why Things Catch On” July 9, at 11:15 AM EST at #Libread1bk. Ask Jonah questions about his principles for crafting contagious content, and how we can apply those principles to marketing our library services. July will also feature free in-person discussions of the book and “Crafting Contagious” workshops worth 2 LEUs for those who need them. Last chance to register for Michigan Regional Meetings and MeLCat Symposiums

The deadline to register is July 2, 2015. There are still plenty of spots left to attend one of seven meetings around the state. In July, MCLS and the Library of Michigan will be coming to a location near you to share information about recent developments/projects in Michigan’s library community, including a half-day session devoted to all things MeLCat and RIDES. Regional meetings in Indiana will take place in the fall.

Harwood/ALA Public Innovators Lab for Libraries to be held in Detroit, MI

The next Harwood/ALA Public Innovators Lab for Libraries new-window-icon.png will be held in Detroit, MI, October 14-16, 2015. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the “turning outward” practice of engaging your community, and it’s close to home. MCLS will offer scholarships to attend for up to 20 Indiana MCLS member libraries through the grant program for Indiana libraries funded through the sale of the former INCOLSA building.

Nominations open until July 10 for MCLS Board of Directors

The MCLS Nominating & Leadership Development Committee seeks nominations from the membership for the following openings on the MCLS Board of Directors:

Each seat has a three-year term, beginning January 1, 2016 and expiring December 31, 2018. The Board meets 4 times a year, in February, May, August, and November, and Board meetings alternate between Michigan and Indiana. The November meeting includes a two-day strategy retreat to review activity of the previous year, assess trends, and determine strategic changes to MCLS’s services. Newly elected Board members are asked to attend the annual retreat. MCLS reimburses Board members for all direct meeting expenses. Deadline for submission of names is 5:00 pm on July 10, 2015. RIDES Advisory Committee selected

Thanks to the many folks throughout Michigan who volunteered to serve on the RIDES Advisory Committee. The purpose of the committee is to serve as representatives of all types and sizes of RIDES participating libraries, and to provide feedback and recommendations to MCLS. The committee approves the RIDES policies and procedures.
