The Library of Michigan and MCLS are pleased to announce a continuation of their partnership with The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation. Up to an additional 50 Michigan library staff will be trained in the framework of the Institute. This opportunity will include an eight week, online Virtual Public Innovators Lab, followed by 18 months of coaching. Over 150 library staff have already completed training, representing dozens of Michigan libraries.
The training will be led by Certified Harwood Coaches from the Institute. It will be robust, extensive, and is being offered at no charge to selected Michigan libraries with LSTA funding provided through Library of Michigan.
Applications are now available and being accepted through August 28.

In March, MCLS sponsored a cohort of 50 Indiana library staff from all areas of Indiana to participate in The Harwood Institute Public Innovators Lab in Indianapolis. The members of the Indiana cohort continue to participate in a monthly virtual meeting with a Harwood certified coach. Since the Lab, the participants have been busy engaging with their communities, library boards, and staff. We look forward to sharing stories from this group of Public Innovators in the coming months!
The Basic Facilitation trainings offered in July were wonderful learning experiences for 33 library professionals from around the state. In partnership with the Library of Michigan, MCLS will be offering four more trainings on facilitation presented by We Can Work It Out, LLC. The workshops will be on the topics of "Handling Conflict" and "Coming to Agreement," and will be hosted at four libraries across Michigan.
Registration is open for the four advanced facilitation workshops, and several are already close to full. Check them out today!
While MCLS may not have a physical office location in Indiana, we are present and working for you! Staff members, including Scott Garrison, Executive Director, and Stephanie Davis, Group Purchasing Manager, have traveled to Indiana to visit several member libraries this spring and summer, while Michelle Bradley, Manager of Engagement, Consulting, and Training, and Pam Seabolt, Community Engagement Librarian, work from their homes in Indiana and at the MatchBOX Co-working Studio in Lafayette.
MCLS will end its contract with bibliotheca on Dec. 31, 2019. MCLS has a long history of providing members with access to specialized library supplies and materials through what was 3M and is now bibliotheca. Our decision to discontinue this service comes after thoughtful consideration, and involved weighing the benefits and costs associated with the service.
Between now and December, MCLS will offer special pricing on in-stock products and provide libraries with listings of other suppliers for bibliotheca products. We encourage libraries to purchase any products they will need prior to the Dec. 31, 2019 deadline. If you have any questions, please contact Group Purchasing Manager Stephanie Davis at daviss@mcls.org or (800) 530-9019 ext 154.
Are you planning to attend the Internet Librarian conference in October? If so, MCLS and Amigos Library Services can help you save money on early bird conference registration. One thing I really appreciate about the MCLS Board of Directors is their commitment to staying connected with our members and how MCLS serves them, and could serve them in the future. To that end, the Board created a brief survey that we sent out to all MCLS members on July 16. If you haven’t already, please complete the survey today. We want to hear from you! The Board will use the data we gather to continue advancing their vision for our organization. Then, in turn, I will work with our staff to operationalize that vision. Everyone does their part so MCLS can serve our members and the library community.
Clearly, it takes a great deal of hard work and execution to realize any vision. That’s where our amazing MCLS staff come in!
