10 Indiana libraries receive scholarships from MCLS to attend Harwood/ALA Public Innovators Lab

The following libraries were selected to receive a scholarship from MCLS to attend the 2016 Harwood/ALA Public Innovators Lab in Atlanta, Georgia, October 19-21:

The funds were made available to MCLS member libraries in Indiana through a grant program established by the MCLS Board of Trustees from the proceeds of the sale of the former INCOLSA building in Indiana. The scholarships will provide tuition and travel support to 15 individuals from the 10 libraries.

2nd Michigan Harwood Cohort announced

We received competitive applications from nearly 70 individuals representing dozens of libraries. From that strong pool we awarded scholarships to 50 individuals from over 30 libraries. This cohort is a spectrum of library types, sizes, and geographic locations from across the state.

The group will attend a 1.5-day long workshop with Harwood coaches and undergo nine months of follow-up training.

Community Conversations continue in Indiana and Michigan in August

Indiana and Michigan library staff are invited to attend one of 11 Community Conversations to be held in August and September. There will be six held in central and northern Indiana, and five held in northern and western Michigan. The purpose of these conversations is to gather information about the needs of the library community and to explore your hopes, concerns, and aspirations. This spring we held rounds of conversations in both states and already have talked to over 150 library staff. We look forward to continuing this conversation and sharing what we learned from you.

Reading Redefined: Deep Reading, Learning, and the Impact of Digitization

On September 30, a collaborative of Michigan library service agencies are sponsoring Reading Redefined: Deep Reading, Learning, and the Impact of Digitization, a one-day symposium in Lansing to discuss the ways that reading is changing as our environment and interactions become ever more digital. We are excited to have Maryanne Wolf and Natalie Phillips as plenary speakers. They are both pre-eminent researchers in the field. In addition to their own published research, they have been featured in numerous articles and interviews.

The MeLCat Advisory Committee advises the State Librarian on policies for our statewide catalog and resource-sharing system. Committee members with a range of backgrounds from across the state represent the wide variety of libraries and automation systems that come together to make MeLCat successful.
