We are pleased to announce that Kalamazoo Public Library in Kalamazoo, MI has selected Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) to deliver consulting services to their board, staff, and community in developing a comprehensive strategic plan. Our full strategic planning service will include providing a data package, facilitating community conversations based on The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation's “Turned Outward” approach, and facilitating planning retreats. Our work with Kalamazoo Public Library will commence in September 2018.
MCLS, in partnership with the Library of Michigan, is pleased to be hosting a Community Engagement Summit in September. Richard C. The day will include other national leaders in community engagement, as well as a panel of directors from Michigan libraries who are making great strides in engaging their own communities.
Registration is currently open to all, but will be closing soon! The final registration deadline is Monday, September 10, so don't miss your chance!
As a result of a successful Linked Data Summit held in March 2017, MCLS facilitated the formation of a multi-state Linked Data for Libraries Users Group. The purpose of the group is for staff of libraries to discuss the latest developments in Linked Data and the implications for libraries, share experiences, explore new products, and raise awareness.
Towards this effort, there will be a virtual All Users Group Meeting on Wednesday, November 7 from 3-4pm Eastern (2-3pm Central). For more information on the All Users Group meeting, including how to join the Users Group and attend the virtual meeting, visit Linked Data for Libraries Users Group.
We'll be gathering together in both states again in September to discuss community engagement efforts at your libraries. This time, we'll be in western Indiana and in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Attendance is free and open to anyone with interest in community engagement, but pre-registration is requested.
The Michigan Collaborating Partners (Michigan Cooperative Directors Association, Library of Michigan, Midwest Collaborative for Library Services, Michigan Library Association, and Michigan Academic Libraries Association) invite you to a day-long workshop on accessibility in libraries on Friday, November 9, 2018.
Equality in access for every member of your community is a core library value and it can be challenging to satisfy all of the needs of your patrons. This workshop will cover important aspects of library accessibility and provide you with new tools to help serve all patrons equally.

It could have been any hot-button issue: Immigration reform. Police violence. Gun control. The topic this time was climate change. Online commenters to Montana’s Bozeman Daily Chronicle online chat room were slugging it out in a flame war. But in this case, the commenters hammering away weren’t unknown to each other; they were neighbors with real-life relationships. Two of them decided to meet over lunch to try to understand their opponent’s perspectives. That was the beginning of monthly civil dialogues about climate change. Eventually opened to anyone in town, the conversations led to shared understandings and agreement on actions that could be taken to mitigate climate change.
Librarians across the country have begun to encourage dialogues and conversation like this.
This month, meet MCLS trainer La Donna Riddle Weber. La Donna earned her MLS at Indiana University SLIS and has worked in a variety of libraries and positions including public libraries (branch manager), academic archives (adjunct archivist), school libraries (in both the US and Scotland), special libraries (Lincoln Collection Cataloguer at Allen County Public Library), and library education (adjunct cataloging lecturer at Ball State, Ivy Tech, and IUPUI). She is currently filling a temporary cataloging position at IUPUI’s University Library. She is a member of the American Library Association, the Indiana Library Federation, and was a chartered member of CILIP (Chartered Institute of Information Professionals), the British professional organization for librarians. She has served on the executive committees of the ILF Technical Services Division and of the Cataloguing and Indexing Group in Scotland. When she isn’t cataloging she gardens, reads, manages the family farm, lets the cats and dog in and out, and doesn't blog at www.ladonnaweber.wordpress.com. La Donna teaches a course for us on cataloging of children's materials, and she is shown here as a child herself.
Some fun facts about La Donna in her own words:
La Donna has been teaching for MCLS for one year, and currently teaches four courses for us: Child’s Play: Cataloging Children's Materials, Graphic Detail: Cataloging Graphic Novels, Copy Cataloging of Sound Recordings Using RDA, and Copy Cataloging of Videos & DVDs Using RDA. Several of these courses still have spots available for this semester, and registration is open in the MCLS Store. All of these courses are planned to be offered again in the coming January - June 2019 semester. We are thankful to have La Donna as part of our teaching team!
