Register today for the MCLS Annual Meeting November 18: Innovation in libraries

Maxine Bleiweis of Maxine Bleiweis and Associates will be the morning keynote, presenting on her experiences with innovation as director of the Westport Public Library in Connecticut. Our afternoon keynote speaker will be Barbara I. Dewey, Dean, University Libraries and Scholarly Communications at Penn State University, who will present on new innovative projects happening at her university. The State Librarians from the Michigan and Indiana State Libraries will give “state of libraries” presentations, and there will be a business meeting during lunch, as well as round-table discussions with current MCLS board members. This year, the meeting will be held (and simulcast) in three locations in hopes that members from throughout our region will be able to attend.

Linked Data Summit: Call for proposals announced

We would like to invite you to submit a proposal for a Linked Data Summit to be held on March 16, 2017. This day-long, multi-state event will take place both in Lansing, Michigan and Indianapolis, Indiana. Speakers and participants will interact both in-person and remotely. The summit will feature a BIBFRAME overview and update from Beacher Wiggins (Director for Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access, Library of Congress) and a presentation from Linked Data industry leader Zepheira on the implications for libraries.

Become an MCLS PAL

MCLS is seeking librarians from all types of libraries who would like to help shape future group purchases. Our vision for the Product Advisory Librarians (PALs) is to test and trial products and provide feedback. This information will help us determine the direction for product offerings in a more thoughtful manner.

Small libraries can do BIG things: Third Thursday Twitter chat

If you think your library is too small to make big impacts, take a look at the Williamsport-Washington Township Public Library in Williamsport, IN, serving a population of 3,988 with a budget of $202,581 and a staff of six. They leverage community partnerships and supporters to deliver large-scale programs and facilities, such as their holiday open house, which draws more than 500 people to the library. For ideas and inspiration on how your small library can do big things, join Chris Brown, Director of the Williamsport-Washington Township Public Library for a Twitter chat on Thursday, October 20 at 2pm Eastern (1pm Central) using the hashtag #mclschat.

The Michigan Library Association (MLA) Annual Conference is in Lansing Oct. 26 - 28. Stop by booth #113 and say "Hi" to the MCLS staff! We'll have plenty of good candy to get you in the mood for Halloween. During the conference we will present on Peer Learning and facilitate a panel of Michigan librarians who are part of the initial Harwood Cohort. Come hear how they are engaging their communities. Connect with MeLCat staff

Are you planning to attend the MLA Annual Conference being held in Lansing Oct. 26-28? If so, stop and visit booth #113. MeLCat staff will be there to answer questions, listen to comments, and help you however possible.

If you would like to learn more about linked data and the impact on MeLCat, Debbi Schaubman of MCLS and Shannon White of Library of Michigan will present the details of an experimental project to transform millions of MeLCat records into linked data to increase visibility and the use of Michigan libraries and MeLCat. "Meeting the public where they are: MeLCat, linked data and web search", Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 1:45–2:45pm.

Advisory Committee

The MeLCat Advisory Committee met on August 31 to finalize their policy recommendations to the State Librarian. Watch for upcoming announcements regarding the policy updates.
