We are pleased to announce that Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) has been awarded an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant in the amount of $45,000 by the Indiana State Library. The grant will allow us to offer Libraries Engaging Appreciatively for Positive Change (LEAP) to Indiana library staff in 2022.
LEAP is a professional development opportunity offering an introduction to Appreciative Inquiry as an approach to engagement. It's designed to give Indiana library staff another tool to engage and re-engage with each other and their communities, one conversation and one person at a time, and is intended to help participants feel equipped and inspired to work towards engaging their communities in new ways as we continue to navigate our current realities.
Save the date for January 19 for LEAP 2022. LEAP Forward monthly virtual learning sessions will be held on the third Wednesdays from February-July 2022. Watch the MCLS and Indiana electronic mailing lists for registration information soon!
This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the American Rescue Plan Act, administered by the Indiana State Library.
On Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021, library staff from around the state of Michigan will gather on Zoom for Libraries Engaging Appreciatively for Positive Change (LEAP) 2021! This one-full-day virtual event is a continuation of our partnership with the Library of Michigan and our shared Michigan Libraries Engage project and will introduce participants to Appreciative Inquiry and how to use it for community engagement.
Registration closes TOMORROW, Tuesday, November 2, so don't delay - register now!
This project is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, with additional funding provided by the State of Michigan.
As you may know, at the heart of many open educational resources (OER) are Creative Commons licenses. These licenses allow faculty to use, adapt, and remix content. The newly created resources further build upon the knowledge contained in other OERs, and then, that knowledge is shared with students.
You may not know that there’s so much more to Creative Commons than just the licenses.
To better understand Creative Commons, let’s travel back in time to the early days of the internet.

This fall has marked a return to some of the in-person conferences many have missed so much since March 2020, while others continue to gather virtually. This month, I’ll share some of the things I heard at two I recently attended: the Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME, Michigan’s school library association) and the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) conferences. Each conference featured a variety of presentations on diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice (i.e., DEIJ, leaving A for accessibility aside this month), among many other topics.
I offer a friendly warning: this is a long piece and may be uncomfortable reading for some. I believe it’s important reading to do, and I hope some of these points will resonate with you. Whether you embrace or reject some or all these ideas, I hope you’ll find ways to engage with others on topics related to DEIJ and connect with me at garrisons@mcls.org.
