MCLS hosted Spring 2020 eResources meeting virtually
Normally a face-to-face event, the MCLS 2020 Spring eResources Meeting went virtual this year. Academic librarians gathered via Zoom on Friday, April 17 for the annual meeting to review upcoming multi-year eResource renewals. The day-long event featured morning presentations from several vendors, where renewal details and product updates were provided. Librarians shared their concerns with MCLS and the vendors. MCLS staff gave an update on Group Purchasing activity over the past year and addressed the availability of resources to support libraries during the current COVID-19 crisis. Scott Garrison, MCLS Executive Director, outlined the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC) "Statement on the Global COVID-19 Pandemic and Its Impact on Library Services and Resources." ICOLC’s listing of vendor accommodations during the COVID-19 crisis was also highlighted.

JSTOR Open Community Collections Initiative
During the MCLS Spring eResources Meeting, Reveal Digital shared JSTOR’s Open Community Collections Initiative. This is an effort to open the JSTOR platform and allow institutions to make their openly available primary source/special collections more discoverable and usable in the research and teaching ecosystem.
For the remainder of 2020, and through 2021, libraries can make their already digitized, openly available, text and/or image collections discoverable on the JSTOR platform for no fees. These collections can be published to JSTOR via JSTOR Forum. The Open Community Collections Initiative is not an effort to build yet another institutional repository; rather, it is an effort to provide a high-use, well-known channel for libraries to get these important resources discovered and used. The OED: the definitive record of the English language
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has become the most venerated and most authoritative English language reference ever compiled. As a historical dictionary, the OED is very different from dictionaries of current English, in which the focus is on present-day meanings. You’ll still find present-day meanings in the OED, but you’ll also find the history of individual words, and of the language, traced through 3.5 million quotations, from classic literature and specialist periodicals to film scripts and cookbooks.
The OED today:
- What’s new: every three months updates revise existing entries and add new words.
- The OED today: discover the 21st century OED and find out more about the revision program, how to read an entry, and how to use the online OED.
- Aspects of English: informative and entertaining commentaries on the English language, written by dictionary editors and specialist authors.
- Historical Thesaurus of the OED: now fully incorporated into OED Online, the Historical Thesaurus of the OED arranges the dictionary by meaning. Trace the changing language of the material world, the mind, and society, from the Anglo-Saxon period to the modern day. It is the first historical thesaurus ever produced for any language.
- Video shorts: a series of videos now live examines how the OED is produced behind the scenes.
