MCLS announces staff promotions

MCLS is pleased to announce that Nancy Kirkpatrick has been promoted to MCLS Associate Director and Michelle Bradley has been promoted to MCLS Member Engagement Manager.

Nancy joined MCLS in February 2015 and has been the MCLS Member Services Manager since July 1. She will continue to serve in both capacities, working closely with the executive director on direction, strategy, and development of new services at MCLS.

Michelle began as MCLS Community Engagement Librarian in Indiana in October 2014. Through her efforts, MCLS has gained a higher visibility and greater relevance to libraries across Indiana. As MCLS Member Engagement Manager, she will oversee MCLS’s engagement efforts across both states.

#MCLSchat series for library managers to be held in February

MCLS will host a live Twitter chat series at #MCLSchat with special guests who are veterans in the field of library management. These one-hour Twitter chats will provide opportunities to get expert advice from your veteran peers in the library management field without leaving your desk (or your smart phone). MCLS will interview the experts on topics including hiring, delegating, difficult conversations and project management.

Join us every Thursday in February from 2pm to 3pm Eastern (1pm to 2pm Central).

Making a difference for school libraries

MCLS Executive Director Randy Dykhuis shares his thoughts on the status of school libraries in an article adapted from a talk he gave at “Public, School and Academic Libraries and Student Achievement”, the 2015 Mahoney Conference. The conference was sponsored by the Library of Michigan, in conjunction with the Michigan Association for Media in Education, the Cooperative Directors Association, MCLS, Michigan Library Association, and Michigan Academic Library Association. The conference focused on ways that school, public, and academic libraries can work together to enhance student learning. There was a special emphasis on ways to respond to the closing of school libraries across the state.

MCLS hosts new community engagement discussion list

MCLS is now hosting Community_Engagement, an electronic discussion list for library staff with an interest in "turning outward" to their communities for deeper engagement.  This list will be of particular interest to library staff who have had training in the Harwood Institute approach or have attended a Public Innovators Lab, but is open to anyone with an interest.

MeL/MeLCat server migration

The MeLCat server migration was accomplished successfully, with service restored a day ahead of schedule! Thank you to all MeLCat participants for their cooperation, patience, and understanding during the down time.
