In early 2023, MCLS will co-sponsor presentations by Kristin Fontichiaro of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor’s School of Information and Dr. Emily Knox of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s School of Information Sciences, on understanding and addressing misinformation, disinformation, and intellectual freedom challenges. Many have noted how these issues are heavily impacting a growing number of public libraries, school districts and libraries nationwide, as well as higher education (e.g., in Florida).
Read on for a preview of Fontichiaro's and Knox’s presentations, based on impactful talks each gave during the fall 2022 conference season, and other work.
I encourage you to register for Kristin Fontichiaro’s presentation on Jan. 30, 2023, noon-1:30pm Eastern (11am-noon Central), via Zoom. MCLS is co-sponsoring this event with the Michigan Cooperative Directors Association.

As MCLS prepares to embark on a strategic planning process in 2023, we want to engage with the library community in Indiana and Michigan through a series of Community Conversations.
This engagement process is an opportunity to hear from our community - library staff members throughout Indiana and Michigan - about their aspirations and concerns. The knowledge gathered will help inform MCLS's future priorities as we plan how to serve you more fully over the next several years. You do not need to be an expert; come share your perspective!
We will facilitate 12 virtual Community Conversations via Zoom between Feb. 6 and 18 at a variety of times. The Conversations are open to any library staff in any type of library in Indiana and Michigan. More information including dates, times, and registration links can be found on our website.

Working in a library can be stressful. Many library staff members are exhausted and running on fumes while trying to build inclusive spaces, stand up to censorship, and tend to the day-to-day details of running a library. If this sounds familiar, join MCLS Library Strategists Jenny Kobiela-Mondor and Lissa Krull for MCLS’s new workshop, “Break Out of Burnout & Rebalance Your Life,” on Thursday, March 2, 1-4pm Eastern (12-3pm Central).
Nine individuals from multiple library types, including MCLS Members and Non-Members, earned an MCLS Certificate of Library Development in the following areas:
Essential Workplace Skills Certificate
Basic Cataloging Certificate
Advanced Cataloging Certificate

Created in 2008, Skilltype offers a library specific talent management system through its online platform. Employees complete a skill assessment and Skilltype identifies skill gaps within a library and then creates personalized training plans for each employee. Employees are matched with training offerings made available through the Skilltype repository. Skilltype does not create professional development content but pulls together existing training opportunities and matches employees to right training for the skills needed. The data and insights gleaned from employee assessments help library administrators make more informed decisions. Skilltype is applicable for academic and public libraries looking for talent management support.
