Altadena Library District (ALT)


Children’s Services

 

Under the supervision of the Children’s Librarian, The Altadena Library District has a summer internship available in Children’s Services. The intern will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in the areas of collection development, summer reading program, story time, and reference services to children.  The intern should have a desire to work with children; background or coursework in children’s literature is helpful, but not required.

Beverly Hills Public Library (BEV)

 

Our internship offers a broad overview of public library work, focusing on:

  • Collection management, including how materials are selected, maintained, and weeded.
  • General overview of public library work, with opportunity to observe and work alongside professional staff at public service desks. Intern will also gain introduction to outreach and program preparation. Introduction to Youth Services, including some experience on youth services desk and children’s programming

Additionally, we will schedule meetings and set aside time for the intern to meet one-on-one with key staff members (library director, senior librarians, library managers, and others).

Burbank Public Library (BUR)

Summer Internship offered for the North West Branch

Branches

Burbank's branches offer the full spectrum of library service, from reference to children's programming. Our intern will gain hands-on reference experience, both adult and children, using the library's Sirsi iBistro online catalog and other print and online resources. If interested, the intern may assist with children's programming and class visits and/or assist with implementing features on iBistro. To round off the experience, the student will be involved in collection development (using Baker & Taylor's TitleSource II software), inventory, and preparing booklists and pathfinders. If you are looking for an opportunity to get to know your patrons and to do a "little of everything", our branch experience is for you.

Learning objectives for this placement might include:

  • To gain experience in using reference interview, online databases and print reference materials to assist patrons in answering reference questions
  • To gain experience in preparing booklists, bibliographies and pathfinders
  • To gain experience in children’s and youth programming

Glendale Public Library (GDL)



Reader’s Advisory (RA)

 

Summer FILL internship is for Readers Advisory (RA). Opportunities include: providing RA for the public; book group participation, meeting with local book groups and using book group kits; blogging about books; updating an RA website and helping with a One Book/One Glendale event.

Moorpark City Library


Moorpark City Library is pleased to offer an internship that will provide a diverse experience for a student interested in public librarianship. MCL is a stand-alone city library in a small but active community in southern Ventura County. The library is particularly child- and teen-oriented, with a large population of library users from these age groups. Some of the duties of an intern at MCL could include: Storytelling and participation in preschool and family storytimes; event planning; active participation in collection development, including weeding, researching and recommending of titles, and creating book carts on Baker & Taylor; discussions and work related to cataloging; active participation in providing reference assistance and readers’ advisory to all library patrons; and the creation of book lists and annotated bibliographies. Within these parameters, we are happy to design an internship that will both assist the library and provide the intern with the experience he or she desires. Moorpark City Library is open seven days.

Monrovia Public Library

Youth Services

PURSUING A CAREER IN CHILDREN'S SERVICES? THIS IS THE JOB FOR YOU. EXCITING, HANDS-ON TRAINING UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF A DYNAMIC YOUTH SERVICES STAFF. MONROVIA PUBLIC LIBRARY EMPHASIZES SERVICES TO YOUTH. Job Description: Assist the Youth Librarians in answering youth reference questions; assist youth at the Youth Technology center; assist in preparing and implementing youth programs such as storytimes, class visits and other literary events; assist with collection development projects; perform technical services’ functions on youth materials as needed.

During the summer, assist with the 2,500 member Summer Reading Club

Hours are flexible.

Santa Monica Public Library (SAM)

 

Summer FILL Internships offered in Youth Services at Ocean Park Branch and Fairview Branch

Youth Services provides reference, readers’ advisory and information technology service to young people from infancy to age 17; presents a wide range of programs and gives presentations to elementary, middle, and high school classes who visit the library. Possible internship projects include: producing a bibliography, creating and presenting a program, and creating web pathfinders. Major duties include assisting at the children’s reference desk under the supervision of the Youth Services Coordinator. Fairview Branch Library is located in the southeastern part of Santa Monica. Fairview provides services to a wide range of ages and interests with an emphasis on children’s programming. Some programs are conducted in Spanish. This is an ideal internship for anyone exploring the possibility of working in a public library branch setting as it is a busy branch with a diverse clientele. Internship projects can be structured to suit the interests of the individual and could include childrens, YA, and/or Adult programming. Duties include assisting with reference and readers’ advisory services under the supervision of the Branch Manager.

Thousand Oaks Library System (THO)

 

Technical Services

The Technical Services Department has a full-time supervisor and 1 full-time librarian. The department processes orders online, catalogs materials, receives and processes serials, physically processes new materials and mends old materials. The intern will receive guidance by a mentor and support staff and will be given limited “special project” assignments, primarily in the cataloging unit. Experience will be obtained in capturing bibliographic records, editing MARC and authority records utilizing LCSH headings, Dewey classification, and AACR2 rules. Projects planned include "cleaning up" the Innovative Interfaces database and authority files, cataloging donations, and downloading/editing video records to upgrade old ones.

 

Special Collections

The Special Collections Department has a full-time librarian and a full-time senior library assistant, both are Certified Archivists. Interns are given a processing project that can be either a single small collection, or a part of one of our larger collections. The intern will learn processing, including the basics of selection, preservation, and handling. The internship can be focused to the student’s main area of interest. Training will include completion of a finding aid and creation of a collection level record in MARC format. Interns experience a full range of work in the department, including acquisition of items, digitization of photographs, reference work, and reading room operations.

 

Library Information Systems

The Library Information Systems Department has a full-time supervisor, 1 full-time systems librarian, and 1 full-time senior library assistant. The department is responsible for the integrated library system, the library’s web site, library computer security and equipment, and the library’s local area network. An intern will have the opportunity to experience typical work duties of systems staff, as well as work on short-term projects related to web development.
