MeLCat Library Name Abbreviation Guidelines

1. The goal is to have a unique display form for each MeLCat library's name.
2. If the library name fits in the 30-character display, do not use abbreviations.
3. Don't abbreviate the first word, if at all possible, to provide helpful alphabetical access from MeLCat lists that display to patrons.
4. Public libraries will be asked which form of their names they prefer to use.
5. All other libraries will use the names of their institutions.
6. The following list of standard abbreviations should be used when needed. For words not in the abbreviations list, consult a standard English dictionary for the abbreviations.
7. If an institution is well-known by an abbreviation or acronym, that may be used instead of abbreviating each word using the standard list.
8. MeLCat staff will make the final determination of the display form of the library's name. They may propose alternatives to the library.
