RIDES Frequently Asked Questions
Sometimes when I print out labels it prints the wrong address. Why is that? Libraries that participate via central delivery sites will have the central delivery site address print on the label. The label maker is continually updated to provide the correct address.
How do I change the number of days I get delivery? If you would like to change the number of days you receive service, please email Sue Alt.
What do I do with mystery items that arrive at my library? Ship them either to the owning library, or to ZY001 MCLS, Attention: Sue Alt
How do I know which libraries are No Pack? No Pack is indicated on the RIDES labels maker search screen, and it is printed on the delivery label.
Why are there so many labels? All MeLCat items must have the following identification: a paging slip with the patron information and a MeLCat identifier of some sort - either a bookband or a removable sticker (some libraries attach the paging slip as a book band). Everything that is shipped via RIDES must have a current RIDES label created with the RIDES label maker. The RIDES label is exclusively for the use of the courier sorters and drivers, and has been designed for efficiency in sorting and delivery.
Why can't I have my delivery at the same time every day so I can plan my staff scheduling? In order to offer this service to Michigan libraries at an affordable price, we have had to make some concessions. For example, our library materials are shipped with many types of items - medical, office supplies, etc. - because that lowers the cost. If we were to expect dedicated service - that is, firmly scheduled day and time of delivery - the cost would be a minimum $30 - $35 per stop, as opposed to the current charge. We expect our contracted courier to deliver to libraries between 8 AM and 5 PM, but we cannot demand a specific time of delivery. The courier schedules their driver routes with the intent to deliver on prearranged days, and many times they are able to arrive at or near the same time every day, but there is no guarantee.
Considering joining RIDES?
Who can participate? Participation is open to any public, academic, school, special library, library cooperative, school district, ISD or REMC in the state and does not require membership in the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS).
How much does it cost? Please see our pricing page.
How is the pricing structured? The price is a flat-rate, per-stop fee. Libraries pay for service on an annual subscription basis.
How do I sign up? Please contact Sue Alt. Libraries may join mid-year, beginning the 1st of every month, with a prorated subscription.
What if my library has more than one branch? Each building that requires a delivery stop will need to sign up for the service. So, for example, a public library that has three branches with individual stops would need 4 service agreements. However, the main library can sign up as a single stop with materials delivered via an internal delivery system (central delivery site).
Can I choose my days? Libraries may work with the courier to coordinate delivery days.
When can I start? The beginning of the next month after paperwork is submitted.
